Death of COAS, others, a national tragedy- Gombe governor

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state has described the death of the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Attahiru Ibrahim and other officers as a national tragedy.

He said this while commiserating with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari over the unfortunate death of the COAS and other senior military officers in a fatal air crash in Kaduna on Friday.

Ibrahim Uba Misilli, Governor Inuwa spokesman said in a release on Friday that, his principal said it is a tragedy because it is coming at a time when the military and other security forces are intensifying efforts to combat terrorism, banditry and other security challenges bedevilling the country.

The governor also described the late COAS as a gallant officer and fine gentleman who demonstrated courage and exemplary leadership while discharging his duties.

Stating further, he noted that ”the late army helmsman was at the forefront since assuming office in leading the fight against insurgency, banditry and other forms threats with renewed vigour to bring enduring peace to the troubled parts of the country and defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria, adding that the officer’s gallantry and heroism will be sorely missed, especially at this trying moment in the history of the nation.”

”The Governor, on behalf of the government and people of Gombe state also extended his heartfelt condolences to the immediate families of the late Lt. General Attahiru and all the deceased officers and crew members, their colleagues and associates as well as Nigerian Armed Forces, praying Almighty God to accept their souls and grant them eternal rest,” Misilli said.
