Former Head of State and founding father of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), General Yakubu Gowon, has commended the Scheme’s management for its dedication to the vision that led to its establishment.
Speaking on the continued relevance of the NYSC, General Gowon praised the leadership for maintaining the core objectives of national unity, youth development, and community service, which have defined the program since its inception in 1973.
He emphasized the Scheme’s crucial role in fostering national integration, bridging ethnic divides, and equipping young Nigerians with skills that contribute to national development.
The NYSC, created in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War, was designed to promote unity and cultural understanding among Nigerian youths by deploying graduates to serve in states different from their places of origin.
Decades later, the program remains a key pillar in Nigeria’s development strategy, with its impact seen in education, healthcare, and other critical sectors.
