Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially defected to the ruling All progressives Congress (APC) leading a sweeping realignment that includes 22 state lawmakers, eight federal legislators, 44 local government chairmen, and hundreds of councillors.
The move, announced on Monday January 26, 2026 followed consultation and reassessment of Kano’s political and developmental future.

Governor Yusuf said his decision was drawn by the need to work closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fast-track development and deliver the dividends of democracy.
Describing the defection as “a choice for progress over pride”, praised the Renewed Hope Agenda and announced plans establish a Kano Elders Council to promote unity, stability, and good governance.
The Governor commended APC leaders, including former governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, for their support.
He added that rejoining the Federal Government, improve security, enhance service delivery in Kano State, stressing that the move was about advancing Kano’s agenda, not personal interests.
