Honorable Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a respected retired justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, has reportedly passed away.
Justice Ogwuegbu, who would have turned 92 in March 2025, was celebrated for his dedication to justice and service to the judiciary.
Justice Ogwuegbu was appointed to the Supreme Court in February 1992 and served until his retirement on March 16, 2003.
Prior to his tenure on the nation’s highest bench, he served for five years on the Court of Appeal, bringing extensive experience and a reputation for fairness and diligence.
In December 1999, Justice Ogwuegbu expanded his judicial service internationally, accepting an appointment to the Supreme Court of The Gambia.
His contributions abroad reflected his commitment to justice beyond Nigeria’s borders and underscored his esteemed standing in the legal community.
His Lordship’s career began as a magistrate, and he swiftly rose through the ranks to serve on the High Court of the old Imo State, before joining the Court of Appeal and eventually the Supreme Court.
Known among his colleagues and protégés for his humility, resilience, compassion, and industriousness, Justice Ogwuegbu delivered numerous impactful judgments that shaped Nigerian jurisprudence.
