Flood victims in the Galtumari community of Maiduguri have received support as they return to their homes after a devastating flood that displaced thousands.
The Peace Ambassador Center for Humanitarian Aid and Empowerment (PACHE), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Great Green World, FASGON, donated relief items to the affected residents on International Day of Peace.
The flood, which ravaged 80 percent of the Galtumari community, forced many to flee their homes and took shelter from various Internally Displaced Persons IDPs provided by the Borno State Government.
Ambassador Ahmed Shehu, founder of PACHE, who led a delegation of Yoths Peace Advocates and other invited guests in a walk to the area, expressed sympathy for the victims and pledged support.
‘We are here to sympathize with you on this important day of International Day of Peace,’he said. ‘We selected this community because of the high level of devastation.’
Mal. Usman Aliyu, Director General of the Great Green Wall Agency also was among the visitors to the community and pledged continued support.
He urged residents to avoid building near river areas and emphasized the importance of mitigating climate change through tree planting whereby donating 50 trees to be planted in the community.
Abubakar Muhammad Sa’id, representing the First Aid Sunnah Group of Nigeria (FASGON), sympathized with the victims and donated relief items that was sourced through the organisation from Kano.
Many of the flood victims expressed gratitude for the support they have received.
Falmata Muhammad, who returned home after 19 days of displacement, said that government and non-governmental organizations have been swift to provide aid.
‘Now that we are back to our homes, we need government to build our houses and restore normalcy in our communities,’ she added.
The donated items included sanitary parts, mosquito nets, mosquito coils, clothes, and underwear among others.
As the flood victims continue to rebuild their lives, the support they have received from various organizations has been crucial in helping them recover from this disaster.
