President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after spending about four weeks in Europe on an extended working vacation, declaring that he is healthy, fit and ready to resume work.
Tinubu arrived in Lagos on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after departing Paris, France, where he had spent part of his vacation following an earlier stay in London. The Presidency had described the trip as a working vacation, which began on August 30.
The President was received at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior government officials and other members of his administration.
Speaking with journalists shortly after his arrival, Tinubu dismissed concerns about his health and said he was in good condition and ready to get back to work.
The President reportedly laughed when questions were raised about claims circulating in the media that he had been hospitalised in France, before making it clear that there was nothing wrong with him.
“I am healthy and sound. I am ready to work,” the President said, according to reports of his interaction with journalists.
Tinubu also indicated that the health-related allegations should be viewed against the backdrop of the political atmosphere in the country, suggesting that political actors could make different claims, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
The President’s comments came against the backdrop of allegations by African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who had claimed that Tinubu was ill and receiving medical treatment in France. Sowore has continued to challenge assurances from the Presidency regarding the President’s health.
The President’s return brings to an end his extended stay in Europe, which generated considerable political debate during his absence from the country. The Presidency had maintained that Tinubu remained in contact with officials at home and continued to direct government affairs while away.
During the trip, Tinubu spent time in London before travelling to Paris, where he held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré, among other engagements.
His return also comes ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1. The President is expected to remain in Lagos for the anniversary activities, including a national broadcast to Nigerians and other official engagements before subsequently returning to Abuja.
Tinubu’s declaration that he is healthy and ready to work is expected to put renewed focus on his schedule of official engagements as the administration moves into the final phase of the year and the political environment ahead of the 2027 elections becomes increasingly active.
