Lookman Responds to Gasperini’s Criticism After Penalty Miss

Nigerian and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has issued a heartfelt response following criticism from head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who described him as “one of the worst penalty takers” he has ever seen.

The remark came after Lookman missed a crucial spot-kick during Atalanta’s 2-1 Champions League defeat to Club Brugge.

In a statement shared on social media, Lookman expressed his disappointment over the situation, emphasizing his commitment to the club and its fans.

“It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement – most of all because of what we have achieved together as a team and as a city.

“Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.” Lookman wrote.

The Nigerian international revealed that he had faced difficult moments at the club but had chosen to remain silent out of respect for the team.

However, he admitted that Gasperini’s remarks made this particular moment more painful.

“Along with our incredible fans, we as a team are hurting too with last night’s result.

“During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty; and to support the team, I took responsibility in the moment to do so.” Lookman added.

Despite the setback, Lookman remains focused on moving forward.

“Life’s about challenges and turning pain into power, which I’ll continue to do,” he concluded.
