Former Senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has outlined five major factors that he says continue to erode the earnings of the Nigerian working class.
In a statement shared via his social media platform to commemorate International Workers’ Day (May Day), Sani identified the following as key threats to workers’ economic security: Withdrawal of subsidies, Increase in tariffs on electricity and telecommunications, Inflation, Falling value of the Naira, Increase in rents.
He argued that while workers continue to labor diligently under tough conditions, their take-home pay is increasingly rendered meaningless due to these compounding pressures.
Sani emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidies and rising energy costs, in particular, have had a cascading effect on transportation, food, and housing costs.
The former lawmaker urged both the federal and state governments to prioritize policies that protect workers’ purchasing power and ensure decent living standards.
