Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal expert with over three decades of experience,, has assumed office as Acting chairman of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) following the handover by Professor Mahmood Yakubu..
The transition took place on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Agbamuche -Mbu, who hails from Delta State but was born in Kano brings a rich blend of legal and administrative experience to the role.
She obtained her LLB from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1984, qualified as Solicitor in England and Wales, and holds an LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law.
She also earned postgraduate qualifications in International Dispute Resolution and International Business Law.
Before joining INEC as National Commissioner in 2017, Agbamuche -Mbu led Norfolk Partners, a Lagos-based law firm, and served on the Presidential Projects Assignment Committee (2020-2011).
She also contributed to Solid Minerals Sector Roadmap (2016) and was once the Editor THISDAY LAWYER, where she wrote extensively on governance and justice.
A celebrated Arbitrator and former Secretary of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria), she has authored more than 120 legal columns and played key roles in INEC’s Legal and Policy departments.
Her appointment as Acting Chairman marks a pivotal moment for INEC as the Commission prepares for upcoming elections and ongoing electoral reforms.
