Minister of Agriculture advocates for modern biotechnology to revolutionize Agriculture in Nigeria

Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has emphasized the pivotal role of modern biotechnology in transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

During the 2nd International Conference of the Nigerian Plant Breeders Association (NPBA), represented by Abubakar Abdullahi, Director of the Federal Department of Agriculture, the minister underscored the integration of plant breeding strategies with cutting-edge biotech innovations as essential to addressing the nation’s agricultural challenges.

“Plant breeding has been crucial throughout human civilization, and modern biotechnology is revolutionizing the development of new crop varieties and germplasm conservation”. Abdullahi remarked.

The Minister highlighted biotechnology’s potential to significantly shorten breeding cycles, enabling the creation of more resilient, high-yield crop varieties with increased precision.

He also noted that the combination of these strategies is vital as Nigeria faces the pressures of rapid population growth, climate change, and food security challenges.

Among the key successes lauded were the introduction of genetically engineered crops such as Bt Cowpea and improved cotton varieties.

These crops have provided numerous benefits, including increased yields, reduced dependence on chemical insecticides, and positive environmental impacts. Importantly, these advancements have also contributed to improved livelihoods for Nigerian farmers and a revival of the country’s textile industry.

“The introduction of Bt Cowpea and genetically engineered cotton has not only boosted yields but also lessened the environmental impact of traditional farming practices.

“These innovations are transforming agriculture and directly supporting Nigeria’s textile industry, creating new economic opportunities.” He said.

In an effort to tackle public and widespread misconceptions about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the Ministry announced the launch of a GMO helpline center.

According to the Minister, the helpline will serve as a platform to provide transparent and accurate information on the science, safety, and benefits of GMOs, ensuring open communication between the government and the public.

“With this helpline, we aim to foster understanding, address concerns, and maintain a transparent dialogue with the public on biotechnology”. He noted.

Also, he stressed the importance of public education and engagement in Nigeria’s adoption of modern agricultural technologies.

The Minister’s speech highlighted the Nigerian government’s commitment to leveraging scientific advancements to ensure the country’s agricultural future is both resilient and prosperous.
