The Niger Delta Journalists Association (NDJA) has sounded the alarm on the deplorable state of oil-producing communities in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas of Imo State. Despite being home to numerous oil wells and housing over seven oil companies, these communities lack basic amenities such as electricity, roads, pipe-borne water, employment opportunities, and scholarship schemes.
The Stark Reality of these two local Governments are Neglect and Deprivation: Years of neglect and deprivation have plagued these communities, with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and oil companies failing to deliver meaningful development projects.
Environmental Degradation: Oil spillages have damaged farmlands, fish ponds, lakes, and rivers, leading to food scarcity, poverty, and increased crime rates. Youths Forced into Crime The lack of employment opportunities has driven many youths to engage in criminal activities such as armed robbery and cybercrime.
While communities in Rivers State with similar oil and gas deposits enjoy: 24-hour Electricity Employment, Opportunities, Good Road Network , Scholarship Schemes while Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta communities are left in darkness, with dilapidated schools, poor road conditions, and a general lack of development.
The NDJA is urging the NDDC, Imo State Government, and oil companies to address these issues before it’s too late. They’ve also called on Hon. Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu, the Imo representative in NDDC, to prioritize development in oil-producing communities, as that’s the reason he was appointed.
With a #200 billion naira annual budget for oil-producing community development, the NDJA believes meaningful change is possible. Will the authorities listen and act before the situation explodes?
