Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised
alarm over a “crisis in Nigeria’s electoral system and justice sector.”
Obi made the remarks on Tuesday while commenting on developments surrounding elections, lawmakers, legal practitioners and the judiciary.
He criticised the involvement of highly educated Nigerians in alleged electoral malpractice, as well as the handling of forgery-related matters within the electoral process.
“If you look at what is happening today in Nigeria, where professors are now aiding illiterates to rig elections, where our lawmakers have removed forgery as an offence in electoral matters, where our SANs are defending forgery, we have a crisis,” Obi said.
He also expressed concern over the judiciary, alleging that some judges had become aligned with politicians and their interests.
“Above all, our judges are singing, ‘on your mandate we stand,’” he added.
Obi argued that the situation posed a serious threat to democratic institutions and called for greater accountability, and adherence to the rule of law in the country’s electoral and judicial processes.
