Nigeria is set to participate in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, highlighting its growing contributions to global environmental sustainability efforts.
Among the key initiatives to be spotlighted are grassroots projects addressing desertification and deforestation in Northeast Nigeria.
In 2024, the En Aawa Trees Foundation planted over 2,000 trees across Nigeria as part of a broader campaign to restore degraded landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Local Impact on Global Goals
These initiatives align with the UNCCD’s Great Green Wall Initiative, which aims to restore Africa’s Sahel region by improving land use and building resilience against climate change.
The foundation’s community-driven approach underscores the critical role of local involvement in addressing the global challenge of desertification.
The UNCCD Executive Secretary, Ibrahim Thiaw, has emphasized that combating desertification requires innovation, collaboration, and the integration of local knowledge into global frameworks.
Foundations like En Aawa exemplify this by fostering partnerships with government agencies and mobilizing grassroots support to create lasting environmental and social impact.
Advancing Youth Advocacy
In preparation for COP16, stakeholders have also focused on youth advocacy. A webinar titled “COP16: Saudi Youth Expectations and Opportunities” was held on November 13, 2024, featuring discussions on sustainable land use, green economy opportunities, and the future of land-focused jobs.
Organized by Vision for Sustainable Africa, the webinar brought together experts to explore how young people can lead in advancing the goals of COP16.
The outcomes of these discussions will contribute to the UNCCD COP16 Fourth Youth Forum Joint Statement, reflecting the growing role of youth-led initiatives in tackling land degradation and climate change.
A Platform for Global Collaboration
COP16 presents an opportunity for Nigeria’s environmental advocates to share insights and scale successful projects while influencing global policies on desertification.
The conference is expected to facilitate discussions on afforestation efforts, sustainable land management practices, and strategies to address the socio-economic impacts of climate change.
With its participation, Nigeria will demonstrate its commitment to combating desertification and showcase the potential of grassroots solutions to contribute to global sustainability goals.
The event serves as a reminder of the importance of uniting local actions with international efforts to secure a sustainable future for all.
