The Nigerian Senate has announced an emergency plenary sitting scheduled for Tuesday Febuary 10, 2026, in a move that has drawn significant public and political interest ahead of the general elections.
A statement issued on Sunday by Emmanuel Odo, Clerk of the Senate, said the special session will begin at 12:00 noon and that all Senators have been directed to attend.
The directive came from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, underlining the urgency of the reconvened sitting.
The development follows days of intense debate in the upper chamber after lawmakers considered amendments to the Electoral Act 2026. Last week, the Senate rejected Clause 60 (3) of the bill, which would have mandated the real-time electronic transmission of the election results from polling units, directly to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s portal a proposal that triggered widespread criticism from civil society groups and political stakeholders.
The emergency sitting is expected to address continuous Electoral Act amendments, with observers speculating that the Senate may revisit the rejected clause amid mounting pressure from pro-transparency advocates and legal challenges.
The hastily convened session has reignited debates around electoral reform, transparency, and the legislative role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic frameworks as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
