Public-spirited Nigerians have raised funds to settle the legal fees of Mr. Joe Chinakwe, a trader in Sango Ota, Ogun State who was remanded in prison for naming his dog ‘Buhari.’
Though the Magistrates’ Court 2, Ogun State, whée e was arraigned on Monday, granted him N50,000 bail and two sureties who must be taxpayers in Ogun State, he was taken to Ibara Prison in the state capital after he failed to meet the bail conditions.
The police had charged him to court for alleged conduct likely to breach public peace after he was accused of naming his dog ‘Buhari’ and parading same with the name inscribed in it around a market.
A lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, on Wednesday announced on Twitter that two unnamed Nigerians had raised N90,000 to meet Chinakwe’s legal fees.
He said they responded to his public appeal although he reiterated that he was neither Chinakwe’s lawyer nor had any interest in the matter.
