President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commenced a two-day state visit to France.
The visit which began on Thursday indicates efforts by both countries to foster stronger economic partnerships, with France also aiming to bolster its ties with English-speaking Africa amidst shifting dynamics on the continent.
French President Emmanuel Macron hosted President Tinubu at the iconic Invalides memorial complex in Paris.
The visit began with a ceremonial welcome featuring the national anthems of both nations, symbolizing the deepening relations between Africa’s most populous country and France.
Speaking on the significance of the visit, President Macron’s office highlighted the opportunity to strengthen the already dynamic relationship between France and Nigeria.
Macron, since his election in 2017, has advocated for a “renewal” of France’s relationship with Africa, focusing on building equitable partnerships as traditional alliances face challenges due to military coups and evolving perceptions.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the warm reception, saying, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my friend, President Macron, for the gracious welcome this splendid morning at the start of my state visit to France.”
The visit is expected to focus on fostering economic cooperation, with discussions likely centered on trade, investment, and mutual development goals.
