A burial ceremony in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has turned tragic following the sudden death of a resident pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), identified as Deacon Steve Eyo.
Eyo reportedly collapsed and died while delivering a sermon at the funeral service, leaving more than 300 mourners and other attendees shocked and devastated.
The incident occurred during a sermon titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond,”which the cleric was delivering at the burial ceremony.
According to reports, the pastor began preaching at about 1:10 p.m. focusing his message on the certainty of death, the brevity of human life and the need for people to reflect on what lies beyond earthly existence.
In an illustration during the sermon, Eyo reportedly compared human life to a visit to a market, explaining that while several people may enter a market together, they do not necessarily leave at the same time.
The message reportedly took an unexpected and tragic turn about 15 minutes after he began preaching when Eyo suddenly collapsed while bringing his sermon to a conclusion.
The development reportedly threw the congregation into confusion as mourners and other attendees rushed to his aid.
He was said to have been given first aid at the scene before being taken to a hospital in an ambulance that had been hired for the burial ceremony.
However, despite the efforts to save his life, the pastor was reportedly pronounced dead at the hospital.
His sudden death has reportedly left the bereaved family, mourners, members of the RCCG community and other attendees in shock, particularly because the incident occurred while he was delivering a message centred on the certainty of death.
As of the time of this report, the *official cause of death had not been disclosed, It is therefore unclear what led to the pastor’s sudden collapse and death.
The incident has also drawn attention to the unpredictable nature of life, as the pastor was reportedly speaking about mortality and the hope beyond death shortly before he himself passed away.
Further details concerning his death, including any official medical findings, are expected to emerge from his family or church authorities.
