Life jackets are designed to keep you afloat in water. They will automatically inflate within four seconds of immersion in water.
It turns you into a face-up position, keeping your mouth and nostrils clear of the water to prevent the risk of drowning.
This is particularly important if, for any reason, you are unconscious when you fall into the water.
It can also be inflated by hand by pulling the lanyard attached to it.
Depending on the type, It incorporates a mouth tube for oral topping-up, a whistle , and a safety light.
The safety light is a sealed water-activated battery unit.
All these would help the easy location of victims for rescue.
Motorcycle helmet ⛑
Motorcycle helmets contribute to motorcycle safety by protecting the rider’s head in the
event of an impact. They reduce the risk of head injury by 69% and the risk of death by 42% (Wikipedia)
Wearing a helmet can protect you against injuries to the eye, teeth, and face.
Helmets can protect you from debris that flies up from the road, such as rocks, dirt, and gravel, and can also protect you against tree branches, low-hanging signs, and other objects you could come in contact with.
The incident that took the life of Pope Obumneme Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope (JP) and other #nollywood actors was indeed a sad one, another clear manifestation of our carelessness to life, confused belief system, and absence of basic governance.
We have been so used to “any which way na way” life that we only learn the hard way always.
Normally, every operating speed boat 🚤(drivers) should make provisions for life
jackets for the passengers.
There should be stringent regulations to this effect.
The same should be applied to every motorcycle ride nationwide.
Even if this wasn’t possible in the case of JP and other victims, someone managing a whole crew members in a movie shoot should not only proved them, but make it compulsory, for such crucial safety measures, knowing fully well that he or she got the overall responsibility.
We need to continuously educate the general public on what to do in the event of
life-threatening emergency with little or no sign of, not just on performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), but how also to speedily take victims to hospital.
Finally, and very importantly, our government again needs to be reminded that it’s such a crucial need to provide free functional emergency response teams across the nation.
Virtually all the victims who could not survive are on the account of time waisted between the time of incident and getting to hospital.
There is no country that jokes with such a crucial basic lifesaving provision that doesn’t record casualties.
Remember, anybody can be a victim, including you.
