Lawmakers aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FTC), Nyesom Wike, have reportedly secured a court order, leaked from Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The document, set for delivery on Monday, December 18, 2023, is said to provide legal cover as these legislators embark on an impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Rivers State.
The leaked court order is expected to escalate tensions in Rivers State, as it reportedly shields the pro-Wike lawmakers from legal consequences as they push forward with the impeachment process.
The brewing conflict stems from a recent mass defection of 27 lawmakers, formerly affiliated with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Fubara swiftly responded by declaring the defectors’ seats vacant, intensifying the already bitter political rivalry between the two factions.
Adding another layer to the turmoil, the State High Court in Port Harcourt issued an order last week supporting the four-member Rivers House of Assembly backed by Governor Fubara to conduct legislative proceedings without interference.
However, amidst the power struggle, the state government took a drastic step by ordering the demolition of the assembly complex, citing structural defects.
