The Supreme Court has reportedly fixed Friday, January 19th, 2024 to deliver judgement in the appeal filed by the Gubernatorial candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), David Ombugadu, challenging the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Açcording to a statement on Thursday by Mallam Ali Abare, Media aide to governor Sule, said reliablle sources confirmed that the “apex Court would deliver the judgement tomorrow”
This is coming barely two days after the country’s apex Court had adopted briefs of arguments from all parties and reserved judgements on the Gubernatorial election dispute to a later date to be announced.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced APC’s Abdullahi Sule winner of the Gubernatorial election held on March 18, 2023.
Unsatisfied with the outcome, the PDP’s Ombugadu filed a petition at the Election Tribunal which was granted. But Sule faulted the judgement of the Tribunal and approached the Appeal Court for redress.
In its ruling, the appellate Court set aside the judgement of the Tribunal and reinstated him as winner of the election. Meanwhile, leaders of both political parties had signed a fresh peace accord ahead of the judgement.
During the signing of the peace agreement held at the State Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Lafia on Monday, the Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Umar Shehu Nadada, vowed to deal decisively with any form of trouble before, during and after the judgement of the apex Court.
