Vice Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Rotimi Amaechi, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his aides of showing bias in their response to comments made by Cardinal John Onaiyekan.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, Amaechi said the Presidency’s criticism of the Catholic cleric reflected unequal treatment of Christian leaders.
According to him, the presidency would not have reacted similarly if the Sultan of Sokoto had made the same remarks.
“President Tinubu and his aides would not have insulted the Sultan of Sokoto if he had been the one who made the statements by Cardinal Onaiyekan. We’re being insulted because we’re Christians,” Amaechi said.
The former Rivers State governor’s comments follows the ongoing conversations centered around Cardinal Onaiyekan’s recent remarks, which drew strong reactions from the Presidency.
Amaechi maintained that public officials should respond to criticism based on its substance rather than the religious identity of those making the comments, warning against actions that could deepen religious divisions in the country.
