At least 40 people died and several others were injured while scooping fuel from a tanker conveying Premium Motor Spirit, which exploded along the Bida-Agaie highway in Niger State on Tuesday.
In a statement released, the Controller General, Federal Fire Service Dr. Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic tanker explosion that claimed 40 lives and left many with various degree of injuries along the Essa and Badeggi communities, between Bida and Agaie Road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.
CGF Adeyemi on behalf of the management and officers of the Fire Service commiserated with the families of the deceased, praying for the repose of the souls lost and for the quick recovery of those receiving medical attention.
While sympathizing with the victims, the Controller General lamented the recurring incidents of fuel scooping at the accident scenes, describing it as a dangerous and preventable act that has continued to result in needless loss of lives and property.
He vowed to intensify on public awareness and safety education, particularly in communities located along major routes frequently used by petroleum tankers.
The Controller General reaffirmed the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to working closely with the Niger State Government, relevant authorities to enhance response capacity, intensify public sensitization, and promote strict adherence to road safety regulations.
