U.S President Donald Trump has signed an executive order officially designating drug cartels, including prominent Mexican organizations and other Latin American criminal groups, as foreign terrorist organizations.
This decision, announced on 20 January 2025, aims to combat the violence and drug trafficking that continue to threaten the safety and security of the United States.
“This designation sends a clear message: the United States will no longer tolerate the destruction these violent organizations cause in our communities.
“We are taking bold steps to protect our citizens and secure our borders.”President Trump said.
The new designation grants U.S. authorities additional powers to address cartel activities, including imposing sanctions, freezing assets, and prosecuting members under anti-terrorism laws.
It also allows for international collaboration in dismantling the financial and logistical networks that sustain these groups.
However, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected the possibility of U.S. military intervention on Mexican soil, calling for increased collaboration instead.
“We oppose any external interference,” she stated.
