The candidate of the APC in the Edo Governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has tasked the Police to commence the swift prosecution of the suspected killers of Uwaila Vera Omozuwa and ensure justice.
Miss Omzuwa, a 100-level microbiology student of the University of Benin, was raped and murdered in a church in Benin City where she had gone to study. Her death sparked national outrage and refocused attention on the prevalence of sexual assault and abuse of women in the country.
On Wednesday, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, paraded six suspects involved in the murder following what he described as “united efforts” of the Police, including homicide experts and State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
In a statement forwarded to 9News Nigeria by Mr. John Mayaki, the Chairman of Edo APC Campaign Council, Ize-Iyamu commended the Police for the arrest but insisted that it was only the beginning of the process toward ensuring justice for the family and friends of the late Uwa.
Condemning the rape and murder of Uwa as a heinous crime, he says the perpetrators must be made to face the full weight of the law without delay, and sensitization and legal efforts to prevent and protect women from sexual assault and other forms of abuse are intensified.
