The recent decision by the Ondo State Government to withhold the WASSCE results and testimonials of students involved in misconduct during sign-out celebrations has sparked a national conversation about discipline in Nigerian schools.
What began years ago as a harmless university tradition among graduating students has gradually spread to secondary schools and is now finding its way into some primary schools. The trend has raised concerns among parents, teachers, religious leaders, and education stakeholders.
Videos circulating on social media often show students tearing uniforms, spraying substances, chanting slogans, dancing recklessly, and engaging in acts that many consider inconsistent with the values of education and responsible citizenship.
The Ondo State Government’s action serves as a strong warning that schools remain centers of learning and character development. Educational institutions are expected to produce disciplined citizens rather than encourage acts that glorify indiscipline.
Many education experts argue that the “sign-out” culture has increasingly become a platform for social media attention, peer pressure, and public display rather than genuine celebration of academic achievement.
The spread of this practice from tertiary institutions to secondary schools raises questions about societal influence, weak parental supervision, and the impact of digital culture on young people.
Parents and guardians also have a responsibility to guide their children and discourage behaviours capable of damaging their future educational and career opportunities.
School administrators are being encouraged to organize structured graduation activities that celebrate academic success while promoting discipline, leadership, and moral values.
The sanctions imposed in Ondo State may serve as a deterrent to students who view destructive sign-out activities as normal or fashionable. Educational authorities across Nigeria may now review their policies regarding end-of-session celebrations.
WARNING SIGNAL: If left unchecked, the growing culture of destructive sign-out ceremonies may gradually normalize indiscipline among younger students, weaken respect for school authority, and erode the values that education is intended to promote in Nigerian society.
