Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, has announced the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial ranks; the highest number in the institution’s history.
The promotions were approved by the university’s 11th Governing Council, chaired by Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, during its 78th Extraordinary Meeting held on September 9 and 10, 2025.
According to the university, a total of 58 staff were elevated to the rank of Professor, while 46 were promoted to Associate Professor.
The newly promoted academics cut across diverse fields, including engineering, health sciences, humanities and other scientific disciplines.
A statement issued by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, described the development as a landmark achievement that underscores the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and capacity building.
The Governing Council noted that the record promotions reflect the university’s strategic investment in strengthening its academic profile.
