Project New Nigeria, A youth-driven civic movement, has been officially launched at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
The initiative, organized by the Foundation for Citizens Empowerment and Sensitization on Civic Responsibility, received significant support from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which partnered with the organizers to drive youth empowerment and educational development.
At the launch, the NDDC awarded tuition scholarships to over 250 UNIPORT students and donated 50 iPads and tablets to enhance digital learning and support academic excellence within the university community.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill; Pro-Chancellor, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; representatives of the NDDC; and the convener of Project New Nigeria, Samuel Nzidee.
Speakers at the event stressed the need for greater youth involvement in the democratic process, particularly in voter registration, Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) collection, and active civic engagement.
They also noted that young people remain critical to shaping Nigeria’s political future and sustaining democratic governance.
An NDDC official described the initiative as “a critical step toward building the Nigeria we all desire,” emphasizing the commission’s commitment to empowering youths as drivers of national development.
The launch also featured civic awareness campaigns targeted at students, with a strong focus on promoting civic responsibility, democratic participation, and inclusive governance among young Nigerians.
