The Taraba State University community has been thrown into mourning following the mysterious deaths of a 100-level student, Miss Comfort Jimtop Oliver, and a male student, Emmanuel Kefas, who was earlier suspected but later confirmed not to be her killer.
Reports indicated that Comfort, a first year student of the institution, was discovered lifeless at Emmanuel’s residence, located at Bakasi, opposite the Vice Chancellor’s gate in Jalingo.
Emmanuel, who was also a student of the University, was earlier found dead in the same setting, leaving the circumstances surrounding the incident unclear.
The tragedy has raised serious questions among students and residents, with many shocked by the double loss.
A source who shared insights into the incident described it as “shameful and painful experience” for the family of Miss Comfort, noting that her death highlights the need for undergraduates to prioritize academics and avoid distractions in their early years on campus.
He further emphasized the importance of parental responsibility, saying: “Some parents fail to properly monitor the lifestyle and welfare of their children once they enter the university. If you can pay school fees, you should also make the effort to check on your child’s wellbeing”.
While the cause of death remains unknown, the case has fuelled wider discussions about morality, peer influence, and parental involvement in the lives of young students.
The Taraba State Police Command is yet to release an official statement as investigation into the incident continue.
