The US government also stated that it does not have a preferred political party and would retain a neutral stance as it has been in previous years.

Speaking over the weekend, the US Consul General in Lagos, Will Stevens, said that the government is only concerned with ensuring that Nigerians get their wish for peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.

Stevens disclosed this at the International Anti-Corruption Day event organized by the Consulate in partnership with BudgIT over the weekend.

He urged Nigerians to reject the use of violence during and after the election.

According to Stevens: “Focusing on the upcoming elections in Nigeria, let me be very clear, the United States does not have a preferred candidate or party in the upcoming election.

Our interest is in supporting credible, transparent and peaceful elections that represent the will of Nigerians.

“We urged all Nigerians to reject the use of violence and inflammatory rhetoric during and after election day.”

The three strongest presidential candidates in the upcoming 2023 elections are Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
