The leader of the G100 political pressure group, Salihu Lukman, has admitted that convincing opposition leaders, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, to work together ahead of the 2027 election will be difficult.

Lukman, an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, spoke on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday.

He said the major challenge was the presidential ambition of the leading opposition figures and the loyalty of their supporters.

According to him, each candidate wants to become president, but only one person can emerge victorious.

Lukman said the G100 was urging the candidates and their supporters to put the broader interest of the opposition ahead of individual ambitions.

He warned that if the opposition remains divided, it could repeat the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

“If we encourage them to go in this divided way, we will repeat what happened in 2023 and come back to square one,” he said.

Lukman identified the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu as the main political opponents the opposition must confront.

He argued that allowing opposition candidates to campaign against one another would only strengthen the ruling party.

The G100 leader said the group was working on two major issues: encouraging opposition leaders to negotiate a common presidential platform and developing a shared governance agenda.

He stressed that the proposed alliance should not be limited to removing the APC from power.

“It’s not about changing faces in government,” Lukman said, insisting that the opposition must clearly explain how it intends to tackle Nigeria’s challenges.

He added that the group had received “encouraging signals” from some opposition leaders but acknowledged that time was running out ahead of the 2027 election.
