The United States government has mounted fresh pressure on the Nigerian newly appointed president Bola Ahmed Tinubu to lead ECOWAS military intervention against the Niger Republic military leaders.
In a news bulletin published on the US government website, 9News Nigeria learnt that the Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken made a discrete phone call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the US interest in his handling of the Niger Republic military takeover.
In a press release attributable to Spokesperson Matthew Miller, it was revealed that Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on the 14th day of August 2023.
The information further revealed that the Secretary commended President Tinubu’s leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Second Extraordinary Summit on the situation in the Republic of Niger.
It further revealed that during the phone conversation, Blinken noted to Tinubu, the importance of maintaining pressure on the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) to restore constitutional order and to see President Mohamed Bazoum and his family released.
The US and France are the Western countries that have been conspicuously showing devout interest in the Niger Republic coup, to ensure that the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum is restored back to power.
