In a significant move to address the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, Salman bin Abdulaziz, the ruler of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has summoned Nigeria and other member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to an emergency. The OIC, with a membership of 57 states spread across four continents, serves as the collective voice of the Muslim world.

Nigeria, a country with a significant Christian population, has been a member of the OIC since 1986. As a member state, Nigeria actively participates in the organization’s activities and contributes to discussions on various issues affecting the Muslim world. Given its membership, Nigeria will be part of the emergency meeting summoned by Saudi Arabia to address the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The emergency meeting, scheduled for October 18 and 19, will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting aims to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip and its surrounding areas, which have been marred by violence and deteriorating conditions, endangering the lives of civilians and the overall security and stability of the region.

The Israel-Hamas conflict intensified on October 7 when Hamas launched an unprecedented and coordinated land, air, and sea incursion into Israel. The attack claimed the lives of approximately 1,300 Israelis and left many injured. In response, Israel conducted airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of around 1,900 Palestinians, including 614 children and 370 women, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The United Nations reported that nearly half of Gaza’s population, approximately 1 million Palestinians, have been internally displaced due to the conflict. The situation has been further exacerbated by the blockade imposed by both Egypt and Israel, cutting off essential supplies such as food, water, electricity, and fuel to the already vulnerable Gaza Strip.

The participation of foreign ministers from various Islamic countries demonstrates the importance of inclusivity and regional cooperation in resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict. By coming together, these nations can collectively work towards finding a peaceful and sustainable solution that ensures the safety and well-being of the affected civilian populations.

The international community has been closely monitoring the Israel-Hamas conflict and its impact on the region. The emergency meeting provides an opportunity for Islamic countries to engage with international partners, share updates on the ground, and seek support for their efforts to address the crisis. Cooperation between Islamic countries and the global community is crucial in finding a lasting solution.

The Israel-Hamas has created a dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The civilian population is facing severe shortages of essential resources such as water, food, and medical supplies. The urgent need for humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians will be key topics of discussion at the meeting. Member states will explore ways to alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza and ensure the safe delivery of aid.

The conflict not only poses a threat to the security and stability of the region but also has the potential to escalate into a broader regional conflict. The emergency meeting will serve as a platform for member states to assess the situation, exchange views on regional security, and explore diplomatic avenues to prevent further escalation.

As a prominent organization representing Muslim countries, the OIC plays a crucial role in addressing and resolving conflicts within the Muslim world. The decision to convene an emergency meeting reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the well-being and security of Muslims worldwide.

The OIC serves as a platform for member states to come together and discuss common issues, promote solidarity, and foster cooperation. By calling for this urgent meeting, Saudi Arabia aims to address the immediate challenges posed by the Israel-Hamas conflict, with the goal of ensuring the safety of civilians and restoring stability to the region.

The summoning of an emergency meeting by Saudi Arabia highlights the gravity of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the urgent need for a collective response from the Muslim world. The OIC, as an influential organization representing 57 member states, has the potential to play a significant role in mitigating the crisis and working towards a peaceful resolution.

Through this meeting, member states will have the opportunity to express their concerns, share perspectives, and explore avenues for diplomatic engagement. It is hoped that the discussions will pave the way for a comprehensive and sustainable solution, ensuring the safety and well-being of civilians affected by the conflict and restoring peace and stability to the region.

The international community, including non-member states, must also lend their support to the efforts aimed at resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict. By working collectively, there is a possibility of bringing an end to the violence and ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity for the region.
