Ready or not, the Premier League is back!
Following a breathtaking summer which saw Spain win the European Champions, Argentina lift the Copa America trophy and an emphatic Olympics games in Paris to sum it all up.
However, the main event has returned to TV screens as it began in Friday, with new regulations for the 2024-25 season.
Video Assistant Referee (VAR)
The Premiere League management had unveiled plans to improve the VAR system, which will focus on reducing delays to the match involvement, in-stadium announcements on decisions, better communication and more transparency, maintaining a high intensity for VAR intervention.
The new introduction will allow supporters inside stadiums to be shown all ‘goals’ that get disallowed on the venue’s big screens, including a definitive clip if there has been a delay to the restart of the action because a goal has been checked for a potential offside or probable foul.
Additionally, there is a new Premier League Match Centre social-media account that will communicate the facts regarding VAR involvements.
With the new development, if a referee gets to view an incident from the pitch-side monitor, the replays would be displayed at normal speed with the point of contact slowed down.
Revised Handball Rule
As a result of the numerous penalties from last season with regards to handball, the Premier League has advised players that not every touch of a hand or arm on the ball is an offense.
If a player is deemed to be in a justifiable position or making a justifiable action, or if the ball hits the supporting arm when a player falls to the ground, it wouldn’t count as a handball.
Profit And Sustainability Rules
No changes here. The current PSR will remain in place for this season.
The rules “regulates on-pitch spending to a proportion – 85 per cent – of a club’s football revenue and net profit/loss on player sales.”
However, the Premier League will now ask clubs to provide accounts twice a year, in March and October, enable a more up-to-date assessment.
