Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he is ready to drop his 2027 presidential ambition if younger, vibrant and widely accepted candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Atiku, 78, a key member of the opposition coalition, made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
He stressed that his interest in the race is not driven by personal ambition but by the need to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.
“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside”, Atiku said.
He dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for presidency, saying his concern is to “rescue Nigeria from those who have held it hostage”.
Atiku also urged young Nigerians to take politics seriously, assuring that he would give full backing If younger candidate is chosen to represent the coalition.
