Exclusive Story by Chinedum Anayo | Abuja, 9News Nigeria

Elon Musk’s recent interview with The Economist has sparked intense worldwide arguments after the billionaire entrepreneur made a series of sweeping predictions about artificial intelligence, economics, politics and the future of humanity.

From first declaring that money could become irrelevant by 2036 to warning that humans may no longer control artificial intelligence within a decade.

Musk then painted a future he described as both “exhilarating and terrifying.”

While many of his claims remain speculative, several are grounded in trends already reshaping industries worldwide.

Could AI Surpass Human Intelligence Within Five Years ?

Perhaps Musk’s most striking prediction was that artificial intelligence will exceed the combined intelligence of humanity in about five years.

“There really won’t be anything that AI can’t do better than humans, apart from being human,” he said.

AI systems have already demonstrated remarkable capabilities in coding, scientific research, medical diagnosis, language translation and creative tasks.

However, many AI researchers caution that today’s systems remain highly specialised and do not yet possess the general reasoning ability or autonomy associated with human intelligence.

Technology experts therefore view Musk’s five-year timeline as highly ambitious, although they acknowledge that AI development is advancing at an unprecedented pace.

Could Money Really Become Irrelevant ?

Musk argued that money exists primarily as a mechanism for accessing goods and services.

If AI-powered factories and robots eventually produce food, housing, healthcare, transport and entertainment in virtually unlimited quantities, society may no longer require money in its current form.

Economists say the theory resembles the concept of a “post-scarcity economy,” where technology dramatically reduces production costs.

Despite these trends, significant obstacles remain.

Land, electricity, water, rare minerals and energy infrastructure would still be limited resources.

Ownership of AI systems and robotic production could also remain concentrated among governments and corporations, preserving economic inequality rather than eliminating it.

Meanwhile, IT experts emphasized that AI is more likely to transform how wealth is created and distributed than to eliminate money altogether.

Musk believes automation will eventually make work optional.

In such a future, employment would resemble a hobby rather than an economic necessity, allowing people to pursue work for personal fulfilment instead of survival.

Similar remarks have featured in several of his public appearances over the past year.

While AI is already replacing certain routine tasks, economists note that previous technological revolutions also created entirely new industries and occupations.

The World Economic Forum and other labour-market researchers have consistently projected both significant job displacement and substantial job creation as AI adoption accelerates, though the transition could be disruptive.

Is it the Era of Universal Income or Traditional Employment?

To cushion workers displaced by AI, Musk suggested governments could provide citizens with regular payments.

“I think the Treasury should just simply issue people cheques,” he said.

The proposal resembles Universal Basic Income (UBI), an idea that has been tested in countries including Finland and explored in pilot programmes elsewhere.

This move could provide financial security during periods of technological disruption, while critics question its long-term affordability and possible effects on labour participation.

Musk has previously advocated an even broader concept of “universal high income,” arguing that AI-generated abundance could make such programmes economically sustainable.

Inflation or Deflation?

Musk argued that contrary to conventional concerns that government spending fuels inflation, AI could create the opposite problem.

According to him, if robots produce vastly more goods than people can consume, prices may continually fall because supply would outpace demand.

Economists agree that rapid productivity gains can reduce production costs.

However, persistent deflation also carries risks, including weaker consumer spending, lower corporate profits and slower investment.

Central banks have historically viewed prolonged deflation as economically challenging.

Humans May Lose Control of AI

Despite his optimism, Musk acknowledged that AI presents enormous dangers.

He suggested humans may no longer remain in control of advanced AI systems within roughly a decade, while estimating the probability of catastrophic outcomes at between 10 and 20 percent.

Those concerns are consistent with warnings Musk has voiced for more than a decade, although he now says halting AI development appears unrealistic because global competition has made its progress effectively unstoppable.

Instead, he believes society should focus on ensuring advanced AI systems remain aligned with human interests.

A Take on Regulation

Rather than relying exclusively on governments, Musk proposed that the world’s leading AI laboratories regularly review one another’s frontier models before public release.

He argued that competing companies should hold routine discussions on emerging safety risks and evaluate major systems before deployment.

The proposal comes amid growing international concern over AI governance and follows renewed debate after reports of unexpected autonomous behaviour during AI testing.

Meanwhile, beyond technology, Musk reflected on his increasingly controversial political involvement.

He admitted he had become “a little too involved” in politics and acknowledged the backlash it generated, while continuing to defend many of his policy positions on immigration, government spending and Europe.

A Future of Abundance or Uncertainty?

Musk ended the discussion by describing artificial intelligence as simultaneously “exhilarating and terrifying”, a reflection of his belief that humanity stands on the threshold of its most transformative technological revolution.

Whether his predictions prove accurate remains uncertain.

What is becoming increasingly difficult to dispute is that artificial intelligence is already redefining the global economy.

The central question is no longer whether AI will change society, but whether governments, businesses and citizens can adapt quickly enough to manage the opportunities and risks that accompany its rise.
