A 25-year-old suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighter, identity as Ali Gambo Kanuri, has surrendered to Nigerian troops in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.
Military sources disclosed on Saturday, August 15, 2026 that the individual, identified as Alhaji Ali Gambo Kanuri, involuntarily surrendered to troops in Monguno town after leaving the terrorist camp.
Gambo, a native of Ngarinna village in Munguno Local Government Area, reportedly joined the group through a friend about eight months ago.
Sources said he later became dissatisfied with conditions inside the camp and decided to disengage from the group.
According to sources, sustained military operations around terrorist strongholds also contributed to his decision to leave.
“He chose to abandon the group and surrender to security forces”, a military source said.
After arriving Munguno, he was taken into custody and processed in line with established procedures. The sources added that he has been transferred to relevant authorities for further assessment and action.
His surrender highlights the continue impact on military opportunities targeting Boko Haram and ISWAP positions across Borno and neighbouring states.
Security forces have continued clearance operations across parts of northern and central Borno as part of broader efforts to weaken the operational capacity of Boko Haram and ISWAP in the North-East.
