Nigeria’s Super Falcons will not be at the.2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a campaign ended that ended in disappointment, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to take immediate action.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew to step down with immediate effect following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The decision was announced on Monday, August 17, 2026, after a disastrous campaign for the nine- time African champions. The NFF did not give detailed reason in its brief announcement, but the decision follows the team’s recent setbacks at the Women’s African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying playoffs.
The move comes after the Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the African playoffs, effectively ending their hopes of securing a place at the tournament in Brazil.
Nigeria’s troubles began at the Women’s African Cup of Nations, where the Falcons endured a historic early exit for the first time in their history, they were eliminated at quarter final stage after a devastating 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.
The result denied Nigeria an automatic World Cup ticket and forced the team into playoffs, where South Africa delivered another blow to their qualification hopes, meaning Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1991.
The setbacks encountered have now triggered a major shake-up around a team that has long dominated women’s football on the continent.

With the World Cup now out of reach, the NFF decision signals the beginning of what could be a fresh rebuilding phase for the Super Falcons, as the federation had also set up a committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the Falcons failure to qualify and recommend measures to address the challenges affecting Nigeria’s national team.
