The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described Nigeria as a “traumatised” country that requires experienced political leadership to address the challenges confronting the nation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this during an interview with News News Central, while defending the party’s decision to field former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate.
Abdullahi argued that previous experience in public office should not automatically disqualify politicians from seeking office again, saying Atiku’s experience could be valuable in addressing Nigeria’s current challenges.
He drew a comparison with South Africa’s post-apartheid transition, where the African National Congress (ANC) chose Nelson Mandela despite having younger politicians within the party, because the country needed an experienced “father figure”.
According to him, Nigeria has faced serious security and economic challenges, including terrorism and banditry, while many citizens continue to struggle with worsening economic conditions.
He said the ADC believes the combination of Atiku:s experience and Amaechi’s energy would provide the leadership the party considers necessary to confront the country’s challenges.
“You need someone with the quality of experience that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar brings. You need someone with energy and the drive of a Rotimi Amaechi to back up”, Abdullahi said.
