With 100 days to Nigeria’s 2027 General Election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stepped up its engagement with Nigerians and critical stakeholders, convening a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja to showcase its level of preparedness and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

The high-level engagement, held in Abuja, attracted representatives of political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the diplomatic corps, development partners, election observers, government institutions, religious and traditional bodies, youth groups, as well as local and international media organisations.
Beyond the gathering itself, the meeting presented a crucial opportunity for INEC to address one of the biggest questions ahead of the 2027 election: Can the Commission conduct a transparent, credible and independently managed election capable of earning the confidence of Nigerians?
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, outlined the Commission’s preparations for the 2027 polls, highlighting measures being put in place to strengthen the electoral process, safeguard election infrastructure and minimise possible irregularities.

The Commission also drew attention to emerging threats associated with misinformation, disinformation and the misuse of Artificial Intelligence, particularly as political activities increasingly migrate to the digital space.INEC indicated that it is exploring technological and strategic partnerships to strengthen its systems, protect critical electoral infrastructure and combat attempts to manipulate information or compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
The stakeholder engagement also featured goodwill messages and interventions from various critical institutions and participants, including the police, lawmakers, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, who offered perspectives on electoral security, inclusiveness, transparency, institutional independence and public confidence. For INEC, the commencement of the 100-day countdown is more than a numerical milestone.
It represents a critical period to demonstrate that the structures, technology, personnel and processes being put in place can withstand the pressures and challenges associated with a national election of Nigeria’s magnitude.
But while the Commission has presented its plans and preparations, the bigger question remains:Will INEC’s preparations translate into the trust and confidence Nigerians need to have in the electoral process?Ultimately, public confidence will not be determined by conferences, assurances or policy statements alone.
It will be measured by how transparent the process is, how independently the Commission operates and, most importantly, whether the outcome of the 2027 election genuinely reflects the will of the Nigerian people. As the nation enters the final stretch towards the 2027 General Election, the countdown has begun, and so has the real test of INEC’s credibility.
