Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and THE ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) have adopted new guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in electoral processes to strengthen election integrity across West Africa.
The guidelines were validated at a two-day meeting involving electoral officials and technology experts from sub-region.

INEC Chairman, ProfessorJoash Amupitan, said regional cooperation and responsible use of technology were important to improving electoral credibility as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
ECONEC Permanent Secretary, Serigne Ka, said the guidelines were developed in response to AI’s growing influence on election administration.
He noted that the next phase would focus on implementing the guidelines across member countries and developing practical approaches suited to their electoral systems.

The initiative also highlights the need for stronger collaboration in tackling election misinformation, improving voter education and improving voter education and promoting transparent electoral processes.
