Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duruhas died at 57, sending shockwaves across Nigeria’s entertainment industry and leaving colleagues, fans, and admirers mourning the loss of one of the country’s respected screen personalities.
Duru’s deathHis family announced Duru’s death hours ago, on Friday, October 23, 2026, through a statement published on his official Instagram account.
The family disclosed that the actor died following a brief illness but did not reveal the specific nature of the illness.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the family stated.
The development was also confirmed by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). Its National President, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, paid tribute to the late actor, describing his death as the loss of another great thespian.
Francis Duru was one of the actors who contributed significantly to the growth and development of Nigeria’s film industry.
He began his acting career in 1989 and became widely recognised in the 1990s following his memorable performance as Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s acclaimed 1995 movie Rattlesnake.
The role helped establish Duru as a household name and earned him recognition among Nigerian movie audiences.
Over the years, he featured in numerous Nollywood productions and remained active in the industry for more than three decades.
Beyond acting, Duru was also involved in other aspects of filmmaking and was recognised for his contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry.
He was also a recipient of the United Nations Ambassador of Peace recognition for his positive influence on young people and won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
The actor’s death came only about four months after he publicly dismissed reports circulating on social media that he was suffering from a serious or terminal illness.
In June 2026, a video showing Duru looking frail had circulated online, generating widespread concern among fans and colleagues.
Duru subsequently addressed the reports, insisting that the claims were false and assuring his fans that he was well.
His death on Friday has therefore come as a major shock to many who had followed his earlier clarification.
Duru’s death comes approximately two years after he suffered another devastating family tragedy—the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
The actor had publicly mourned his son at the time, describing him affectionately while expressing his grief and faith.
Tributes have begun to emerge from members of the Nigerian entertainment industry as colleagues and fans remember Duru’s contribution to Nollywood.
His death represents another significant loss to a Nigerian film industry that has, in recent years, continued to bid farewell to several veteran actors and filmmakers.
For many Nigerians who grew up watching Nollywood during its formative years, Francis Duru will remain particularly remembered for his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake and for his distinctive presence on screen.
As of the time of filing this report, the family had not announced funeral arrangements or disclosed further details concerning the circumstances surrounding his illness.
