The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Sunday in London.
The announcement was made in a statement released by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday.
According to the statement, the holiday is to allow Nigerians to reflect on the legacy of the late former president, who served the country both as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president between 2015 and 2023.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to lead tributes during a national memorial service scheduled to hold in Abuja on Tuesday, alongside former leaders, heads of state, members of the diplomatic corps, and other dignitaries.
Muhammadu Buhari, aged 82 at the time of his death, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential and controversial political figures.
