The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Daniel Okanator Oghenerukevwe from his priestly duties following reports of his secret marriage to Ms. Doris Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA on December 29, 2024.

In a decree titled; “Decree of Suspension”, dated January 16, 2025 and signed by Bishop Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the Diocese cited Canon Law 1394, under the penalizing clerics who attempt marriage.

The Diocese revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had previously initiated the process to be released from priestly duties but failed to complete it before entering into marriage.

The situation came to light after videos of the wedding surfaced online, prompting swift action from the Church.

The suspension bars Fr. Oghenerukevwe from performing priestly functions or identifying himself as Catholic priest.

The Church stated that the Canonical penalties are effective immediately, though the suspended priest can appeal the decision by seeking a review or revocation of the decree.

In its closing remarks, the Diocese expressed hope for his repentance stating;

“May God grant him grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the part of reconciliation”.

This action highlighting the Church’s firm stance on upholding it calibacy vow for priests and enforcing accountability among clergy.
