The Rivers State Police Command has warned against the rising trend of women collecting transport fare from men for dates, and failing to turn up for meeting, describing it as a criminal offences and punishable under the Nigerian law.
The warning follows a viral video on X, which the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the practice amounted to fraud and could attract punishment under the law.
“Why will you collect money from a man without going to see him?, It is an offence, a punishable offence”.
Iringe-Koko stressed that such actions fall under the category of obtaining by false pretence, noting that offenders could be arrested and prosecuted If complaints are lodged with the police.
She further urged members of the public to avoid deceitful financial dealings.
The Command is determined to curb exploitative practices while promoting safety and accountability, and reassure the public that the offenders could face legal consequences including arrest and imprisonment.
