A group backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid has threatened to suspend its voluntary grassroots mobilisation if former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, remains in the APC presidential campaign structure.
The Grassroots Movement for Tinubu Continuity Come 2027 made the demand in a formal complaint dated August 25, 2026, addressed to the APC National Chairman, with a copy sent to the Presidency.
The group is protesting Sheriff’s appointment as the North-East Zonal Campaign Coordinator of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
Its National Chairman, Comrade Sani Ahmad Zangina, said the organisation remained committed to Tinubu’s re-election but could not continue its grassroots activities with Sheriff at the centre of the campaign in the region.
Zangina cited longstanding allegations linking Sheriff to Boko Haram, arguing that the claims could damage public perception and undermine confidence in the APC campaign.
Sheriff has repeatedly denied any involvement in or sponsorship of Boko Haram, describing the allegations as unfounded.
The group acknowledged that Sheriff has not been convicted of any offence but said the history of the allegations and their possible political consequences should be considered when filling sensitive campaign positions.
The development comes after another pro-Tinubu group, the Nigeria Rescue & Renewal Movement, called for a review of the APC campaign council over concerns about transparency, accountability and public confidence.
The Grassroots Movement has now threatened to withdraw its voluntary campaign activities if Sheriff retains his position.
It urged APC leaders to reconsider the appointment, warning that his continued role could affect grassroots mobilisation across the North-East.
However, the group stressed that its objection was targeted at Sheriff’s campaign role and did not amount to opposition to Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid.
It reaffirmed its support for the President and pledged to continue mobilising voters for his re-election.
