Erik ten Hag has issued a defiant statement after being sensationally sacked by Bayer LeverKusen just two games into Bundesliga season.
“The decision by Bayer Leverkusen’s management to put me on leave of absence came as a big surprise”, Ten Hag said in a statement.
“To part ways with a head coach after just two league matches is something absolutely unprecedented”.
The Dutchman, who only took charge in the summer, pointed to the challenges of rebuilding after a number of key departures
“This summer, many players who were central to the club’s past success left. Building a new team is a careful process that requires both time and trust”, he explained.
Ten Hag also suggested that the relationship with the LeverKusen hierarchy was strained from the outset.
“I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately, the management was not willing to grant me the time and trust I needed. I feel this was never a relationship based on mutual trust”.
Despite his disappointment, the former Manchester United boss reminded fans of his track record.
“Throughout my career, every season I have been able to see through to the end as a coach has brought success. Clubs that placed their trust in me have been rewarded with trophies”.
Leverkusen are yet to comment on who will succeed Ten Hag in the dugout.
