Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has warned roadside preachers using loudspeakers in public places, especially markets, accusing them of noise pollution and disturbing public peace.
In a viral video on Saturday March 8, Soludu was captured confronting an unidentified roadside preacher in a market instructing him to cease his loud preaching.
The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor made it clear that violations of the state’s noise pollution regulations would face a fine of N500,000.
He further emphasized that preachers should conduct their services within a Church or rent an open space.
He said; “If you want to preach the word of God, you go to your church, you are causing noise pollution.
“You cannot come to the market and begin to disturb everybody else, If you want to preach the word of God, you go to your Church, the person who wants to listen, will come to your church and hear you… you can’t force everybody to hear you especially in the market place where people have come to trade. A market place is not a church.
“I could have asked them to arrest you because you are contravening the Law, you don’t come out, take a place and start preach, it’s noise.
“It’s illegal, everybody has freedom of worship, but you don’t go to the middle of the market where people come to trade and turn it into a church otherwise we will be charging you for this place, you pay maybe N500,000 each day you come here to preach”, the Governor added.
