The 2026 edition of Falling Walls Lab Ibadan was successfully held on Friday, June 5, at the Subomi Balogun Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, bringing together some of Nigeria’s brightest young innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and startup founders.

According to the Chief Organizer Charlotte Meyn, a total of 16 participants from different parts of the country took to the stage to present innovative solutions to pressing local and global challenges. In keeping with the Falling Walls Lab format, each participant had just three minutes to pitch an idea capable of “breaking a wall” in science, technology, business, health, education, sustainability, or social development.

Their presentations were evaluated by a distinguished jury made up of university professors, industry leaders, and representatives of German institutions in Nigeria.

At the end of the highly competitive event, Henry Lamba of Bayero University, Kano, and Schrödinger Technologie Ltd. emerged as the overall winner. Lamba also won the Audience Choice Award for his compelling presentation titled, “Breaking the Wall of Microbial Water Contamination.” His invention, a portable, solar-powered water purification system, impressed both the judges and members of the audience, earning him the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the global Falling Walls Lab Finale scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, in November 2026.

As the Nigerian representative, Lamba will compete alongside winners from Falling Walls Labs held in more than 90 countries and cities around the world.

The global finale offers participants an opportunity to showcase their ideas before leading scientists, innovators, policymakers, investors, and business leaders from across the globe.

Second place was awarded to Solomon Adedini of Sol-Uniq Green Resources for his presentation, “Breaking the Wall of Energy Poverty.” In his pitch, he explained how he converts agricultural waste into clean, long-lasting charcoal briquettes and pairs them with energy-efficient cookstoves.

Third place went to Olaoluwa Ogboro of the University of Lagos, whose presentation, “Breaking the Wall of Industrial Accidents,” presented a smart safety helmet that tracks health and environmental risks of oil and gas workers in real-time to avoid accidents.

The event showcased a wide range of ideas addressing challenges in environmental sustainability, healthcare, technology, education, agriculture, and industrial development. Participants demonstrated the creativity, resilience, and problem-solving capacity of Nigeria’s emerging generation of innovators and researchers.

Beyond the intellectual stimulation of the pitches, the evening was equally rich in cultural expression. Attendees were treated to two vibrant cultural dance performances by the University of Ibadan theatre department, as well as beautiful musical performances by Peggy Chilaka (voice) and Olatunde Oluwadunsin (Piano), making the event a celebration of both innovation and the arts.

Falling Walls Lab was established in 2011 by the Falling Walls Foundation to commemorate the historic fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989.

The initiative was created to celebrate breakthrough thinking and to provide a platform for young researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators to present transformative ideas capable of overcoming societal barriers.
Over the years, the competition has grown into a global network of innovation hubs, attracting thousands of participants and fostering international collaboration.

Through its unique three-minute pitch format, Falling Walls Lab encourages concise communication of complex ideas while connecting talented individuals with global opportunities.

The Ibadan edition of Falling Walls Lab 2026 was organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in partnership with Beiersdorf Nivea Nigeria and the German Consulate General in Lagos. The event reaffirmed the commitment of the organizers to supporting innovation, scientific research, entrepreneurship, and youth development in Nigeria, while creating pathways for outstanding talents to gain international recognition and impact.
