The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reiterated his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election, despite admitting that he has no evidence to substantiate the claim.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, made the statement during an interview with the BBC when he was asked whether he still maintained that he won the election after the courts dismissed his petitions challenging the result.
In 2023 election, Obi contested under the Labour Party (LP) and finished third with 6,101,533 votes.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election with 8,794, 726 votes, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second with 6,984,520 votes.
Obi challenged the election results at the Presidential Election Petition Court, alleging irregularities and electoral malpractice across the country. However, in September 2023, the court dismissed his petition, ruling that he had not presented sufficient evidence to substantiate his allegations.
In October 2023, the Supreme Court upheld Tinubu’s victory and dismissed the appeals filed by Obi and Atiku.
Asked whether he still believed he won the 2023: election, Obi said: “I still stand by what I said.When pressed on whether he had evidence to prove that he won the election, he responded!;
“There is no evidence. I won the election, and I will stand by that”.
