Imo House of Assembly Owerri has moved a good motion to check and regulate the activities of operators of gas stations and the process of its establishment going hay wire in Imo state.
On this therefore, the motion to Urge the State Government to Quickly check the menace of the proliferation of Cooking Gas stations in the State as chiefly Sponsored by Hon Chief Sam Osuji is ripe while calling on the Governor of Imo State to give a nip on the bud to make the bill an immediate law against such menace ravaging the State.
The motion also covers the revival and revisit of Imo Petroleum law , guidance and regulations on gas station establishment in the state.
However , Honourable members present at the plenary reacted in favour of the motion while reminding the masses of the hazard and challenge of the menace on human life and in extension destruction of properties.
Gas plants that are illegally established have to be removed with immediate effect to curtail the dangers and regulate its operation.

In furtherance, cooking Gas, otherwise known as liquefied Petroluem gas (LPG) is a basic need used for domestic cooking in the homes across various homes.
Whereas cooking Gas stations and Local outlets are now critically posing serious threats to lives and properties within residential areas across the state.
Nothing that the Department of Petroluem Resources (DPR) , the Petroleum products pricing regulatory Agency (PPPRA) and the petroleum equalisation fund (PEF) which no longer exist , but have been replaced by the Nigeria midstream and downstream Petroluem regulatory authority, (NPRA) and the Nigerian upstream regulatory commission (NURC) are statutorily empowered to ensure compliance with Petroluem laws, regulations and guidelines in the oil and gas industry, and guidelines in the oil and gas industry, and establishment of retail outlets and other locations.
The House members aptly captured every necessary step to regulate gas operators in the state while resolved that the state Governor should urgently direct the ministry of petroleum, ministry of environment and OCDA to jointly carry our investigation on these cooking gas stations and Local retail outlets located in residential areas with the view to sealing the ones that are too dangerously located so as to protect and preserve the lives and properties of Imo residents.
The relevant IMHA committees were charged to invite without delay all appropriate committee to find a long lasting solution in Imo state.
The IMHA finally adjourned to 3rd September 2024 as moved by the majority Leader Kanayo Onyemaechi.
